NJ has been a “real deal BBQ” wasteland for a long time. Nowadays there are several standouts like Kimchi Smoke in Westwood and Red, White and Que in Kearny. Today, Lynn Clingman and I checked out @BossHogBBQ, a newcomer to the NJ BBQ scene located in South Plainfield, NJ.

Two brothers doing real Southern BBQ.

When trying out new places, Lynn and I have a very simple determination. Would we run back here or will we not. We will definatley run back here again! The guys are friendly and passionate about BBQ!

We ordered the Boss Hog Sampler- 1/4 lb brisket, 1/4 lb Pulled Pork, 1/4 lb pulled Chicken and 1/4 rack of ribs. You get to choose 4 sides.

We had the baked beans (a real winner!), the Mac and Cheese, cole slaw, and cornbread.

THE MEATS:

  • Brisket: Beuautiful Smoke ring, not over smoked, tender and nice bark

  • Ribs: meaty, tender with a nice bite (ie. Not fall off the bone overcooked) great dry rub and appropriate amount of smoke.

  • Pulled Pork: nice flavor, slightly dry by the time we got to where we stopped to eat out food ( I like a little rendered pork fat drizzle on my Pulled pork) but not a deal breaker by any means.

  • Pulled chicken: My least favorite BBQ meat at any place, but this was tasty dipped in the White BBQ sauce

THE SIDES:

  • Baked Beans: mind glowingly outrageous! , made with several varieties of dried beans, sweet with a thick sauce the way I like them

  • Mac and Cheese: Creamy and delicious, while I prefer Mac and cheese made with smaller shells, the pasta was perfectly all dente and not mushy.

  • Cole Slaw: fresh and crunchy with a nice clean flavor and not loaded down with mayo. Perfect to cut the fat of the BBQ meats.

  • Cornbread: nice thick piece, moist and not overly sweet.
